In lens implant procedures, a special micro thin lens, having the power of your spectacles is implanted over the natural lens of the eye.
Lens implant procedures are usually advised when somebody is not fit for laser based procedures. Such may include individuals with thin corneas, dry eyes, very high numbers etc.
Since the micro thin lens (Phakic IOL) is placed over the natural lens, it does not disturb the natural autofocus mechanism of the eye.

SMILE
SMILE is a step second to Contoura Vision. It is also very popularly known as "Flapless LASIK". In SMILE technology, only one laser known as femtosecond laser is used. The laser cuts out a slice of tissue (Lenticule) which is then pulled out through a small opening to induce vision correction. SMILE is around for almost 5 years now and just acquired its US-FDA approval in 2017. The results of SMILE in Hyperopia (Plus Numbers) and Pure Cylinders (Astigmatism) are mixed, so currently the technology is used primarily for Myopic (Minus Numbers) corrections till additional research is completed for full use.

LASIK
LASIK has been around for more than 25 years and the advanced version "Blade-Less LASIK" has been around for more than 10 years. Blade-Less LASIK is considered as a minimum standard for someone opting for laser vision correction. Blade-Less LASIK involves 2 lasers. First, a Femtosecond Laser (Microkeratome blade in conventional LASIK) is used to create a flap and then another laser, Excimer Laser is used to change the curvature of cornea to induce vision correction. PRK / ASA

PRK was the first attempt by mankind to induce vision correction by lasers. Currently PRK is used in very specific cases such as thin corneas and SMILE re-treatments. in PRK, no flap is created and laser is directly applied to the surface of cornea. Since flap acts as a bandage and PRK is performed without the flap, the recovery in PRK uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Also the recovery is prolonged and takes about 10 - 20 days to fully recover. Sometimes recovery from PRK can be uneven and patient can present with variation to zero correction. ASA is an advanced form of PRK. StreamLight is the latest technique offering no flap, no touch advantages.

ICL (Phakic IOL)
ICLs are micro thin lenses implanted over the eye's natural lens to induce vision correction. ICL is similar to a contact lens, just that a contact lens has to be worn daily and ICL is permanently implanted in the eye. ICL is usually advised for candidates not suitable for Laser Vision Correction. Such may include individuals with dry eyes, thin corneas, and very high numbers beyond correction limits of laser procedures.
